UN compensates Ghanaian soldier injured on peacekeeping mission in Lebanon

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has presented a United Nations compensation package to Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Alhassan Habib, who sustained injuries during a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

WO1 Habib, who served with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) under Ghana Battalion 89 (GHANBATT 89), was injured in a vehicular accident while on official duty.

The presentation took place on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, during the CDS’s familiarisation visit to the 3 Garrison in Sunyani. The visit forms part of his nationwide tour to interact with troops, assess operational readiness, and address welfare concerns.

The compensation, provided by the United Nations, aligns with international protocols aimed at safeguarding the welfare and financial security of personnel who suffer injury, illness, or death in the line of duty.

As part of his regional engagements, Lieutenant General Agyapong also paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The visit highlighted the strong ties between the Ghana Armed Forces and traditional authorities in maintaining peace and security.
