UG lifts ban on social gatherings amid improved COVID-19 situation

The University of Ghana, Legon, has lifted the ban on social gatherings that was imposed following a recent spike in COVID-19 cases on campus.

In a notice issued by the Office of Student Affairs — in consultation with the University Health Services and University Management — the university announced on Monday, July 14, that the restriction has been removed with immediate effect.

“The restriction on social gatherings on the University of Ghana campus due to the resurgence of COVID-19 has been lifted with immediate effect,” the statement said.

This move allows student bodies and campus-based organisations to resume normal activities. Groups such as the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), religious groups, and departmental and school associations are now permitted to hold their week celebrations and other events.

“GRASAG, SRC, JCR, religious groups, departmental and school associations are now permitted to organise their week celebrations,” the notice reiterated.

However, university authorities emphasized that health and safety must remain a top priority. Students and event organisers are expected to strictly observe COVID-19 safety protocols to guard against another wave of infections.

“Note that all COVID-19 protocols should be adhered to. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated,” the statement concluded.
