The University for Development Studies (UDS) clinched the 2025 World University Games football title with a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over defending champions Paulista University of Brazil.
A lively crowd of nearly 23,000 witnessed a pulsating final, which began with a nightmare start for the Ghanaians. Inside the opening 30 seconds, Gabriel Viera pounced on a defensive lapse and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo to hand Paulista an early advantage.
But Ibrahim Tanko’s men quickly regrouped, dictating play and creating numerous chances, though poor finishing kept them trailing for much of the contest.
Their persistence finally paid off deep into stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, Frimpong weaved past his marker and forced a save from Paulista’s goalkeeper Silva, only for captain Asigre Sulemana to bury the rebound and force extra time.
UDS carried their momentum into the additional period, but Silva stood tall with a string of impressive stops. However, in the 121st minute, the pressure proved too much. A corner from Ezedeen Alhassan slipped through Silva’s grasp and into the net, sealing a dramatic turnaround for the Ghanaians.
The late winner sparked jubilant celebrations from the UDS bench, with Tanko and his players mobbing the touchline in delight. Paulista, rattled by the shock, barely managed a restart before the referee blew the final whistle.
The victory crowned UDS as champions of the 2025 Games, ending Paulista’s reign as holders and marking a historic triumph for Ghanaian university football.
