The 62nd Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has taken a bold step to advance menstrual health and student welfare through the distribution of sanitary pads to female students across campus.
The donation exercise, held on Friday, July 11, 2025, was led by the Office of the Women’s Commissioner, Ms. Freda Kumi, with support from SRC President Abraham Norman Nortey. The initiative reached hundreds of students and was widely lauded by beneficiaries as a timely and thoughtful intervention.
Ms. Kumi described the gesture as part of a broader effort by the SRC to address gender-specific challenges that affect academic focus and personal well-being.
“We know the quiet battles many female students face during their menstrual cycles. This initiative is about more than hygiene—it’s about restoring dignity, offering support, and tackling stigma head-on,” she said.
Many students expressed deep appreciation for the support. Ama, a level 200 student from the Faculty of Social Sciences, said:
“There are times we have to prioritize between books and basic hygiene needs. This makes a real difference.”
Another student, Rita, echoed similar sentiments:
“It’s more than just pads—it’s about being seen, heard, and valued.”
SRC President Abraham Norman Nortey emphasized the Council’s commitment to practical, people-centered leadership:
“Leadership should be responsive. This is one of several initiatives we are rolling out to ensure that no student is left behind in their academic journey due to preventable challenges.”
The donation ceremony, which featured music and brief solidarity speeches, also served as a platform to spotlight the broader national conversation on menstrual health and equity, especially within academic institutions.
With this initiative, the UCC SRC joins a growing number of student bodies across Ghana working to eliminate period poverty and promote inclusive support systems on campuses.
