Ghana U-20 forward Jerry Afriyie has exited the Black Satellites’ training camp in Egypt to return to his Spanish club, CD Lugo.
Afriyie played a vital role in Ghana’s first two Group C matches at the ongoing tournament, coming off the bench to feature in the 1-1 draw against DR Congo and later providing a crucial assist in the hard-fought 1-0 victory over reigning champions Senegal.
His departure was pre-arranged as part of an agreement between CD Lugo and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), allowing the striker to participate in only the first two group fixtures.
The former Thought FC star had been instrumental in Ghana’s qualification for the tournament and was considered a key attacking asset for head coach Desmond Ofei.
Afriyie’s absence presents a significant challenge for the technical team ahead of Ghana’s decisive final group match against the Central African Republic on Thursday.
A win would secure the Black Satellites a place in the quarterfinals.
Kick-off for the game is scheduled for 15:00 GMT.
