Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead in separate police operations targeting criminal activities along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway.
The deceased have been identified as Oman Amandu, also known as Manu, and another unidentified suspect believed to be part of a robbery syndicate operating in the area.
According to a police situational report, the first incident occurred on March 18, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., when personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters, acting on intelligence, moved from Atebubu to Ejura to arrest a suspect identified as Osman at his hideout.
Police say the suspect, described as a notorious armed robber, had been linked to a robbery attack on March 14, during which gunmen fired into a moving vehicle along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway, leaving a passenger injured.
During the attempted arrest, Osman reportedly pulled out a single-barrelled gun and attempted to engage the police. Officers returned fire, leaving him critically wounded.
A search conducted on him led to the retrieval of a single-barrelled gun, five live cartridges, GH¢200 in cash, and a Tecno Pop 10 mobile phone. He was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
In a separate incident on March 25, 2026, at about 11:10 p.m., PID personnel on routine patrol encountered a group of about five suspected robbers near Kasei along the same highway.
The suspects, reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle, single-barrelled guns, machetes, and other weapons, signalled an unmarked police vehicle to stop and opened fire.
Police returned fire, leading to a shootout during which one of the suspects was shot while the others fled into a nearby bush.
Items retrieved from the second suspect included a single-barrelled gun, AK-47 ammunition, multiple mobile phones, a machete, GH¢310 in cash, and other personal effects.
The injured suspect was also taken to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police say efforts are underway to track down the remaining members of the robbery gang as operations intensify to restore safety along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway.
