Two National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress) Members of Parliament for Guan and Hohoe constituencies, Fred Agbenyo and Thomas Tsekpo, have announced plans to submit petitions seeking the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.

The announcement comes a few weeks after Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie dismissed petitions seeking the removal of Madam Mensa, her two deputies, and the Special Prosecutor, allowing them to remain in office.

The earlier petitions, submitted by individuals and civil society groups, accused the EC Chair and her deputies of accountability and administrative lapses.

In a Facebook post on March 17, Mr. Agbenyo cited what he described as unresolved issues stemming from the 2020 general elections. He argued that the conduct of the polls in the Guan and Hohoe constituencies led to injustices that remain unaddressed, raising concerns about how the Electoral Commission handled the process.

According to him, these developments cast doubt on Madam Mensa’s suitability to continue in office, maintaining that her removal is necessary.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tsekpo, the MP for Hohoe, is said to be supporting the move, aligning with calls for increased accountability within the Electoral Commission.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the Presidency Communications Office said that after reviewing the submissions, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie informed the President in a letter dated January 26, 2026, that no prima facie case had been established.

As a result, no further proceedings will be initiated regarding the requested removals.

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, noted that the development effectively closes the matter unless new legal grounds emerge.
