Ghanaian legal icon Tsatsu Tsikata has cancelled a scheduled three-day event marking his 50-year milestone in legal practice, following the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two Ministers of State.
The commemorative programme, which had been planned to honour Tsikata’s distinguished half-century career in law, was officially called off on Wednesday, August 6, in the wake of the national tragedy.
In a statement, Mr. Tsikata expressed deep sorrow over the fatal crash and said the decision to cancel the event was taken out of reverence for those who lost their lives.
“Following the tragic news of a helicopter crash that has sadly taken the lives of two Ministers of State and six others, the three-day event to celebrate fifty years of my legal practice is cancelled,” he announced.
The veteran lawyer and senior partner at Fugar and Company added, “We are overwhelmed with grief, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.”
The crash, which occurred near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, has sent shockwaves across the country. The loss of key public officials and military personnel has drawn widespread national mourning.
Mr. Tsikata, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most respected legal minds, was poised to mark the occasion with a celebration of his career’s achievements, spanning law, education, and public service.
Instead, his choice to stand down from the festivities has been seen as a gesture of empathy and solidarity in a moment of national sorrow.
As tributes continue to pour in, the cancellation reflects the shared grief of a country grappling with the painful aftermath of an unexpected tragedy.
