Tribunal system will fuel corruption; we don’t need it – Prof. Ansa-Asare

Former Director of Ghana School of Law, Kweku Ansa-Asare, has stated that any plans to reintroduce the tribunal system under a Mahama-led government would be in bad taste.

According to him, reviving the tribunal system would erode Ghana’s democratic progress and further fuel corruption.

“The tribunal has always been here, so any nominee who says we should reintroduce it didn’t speak well. Sections 39–40 of the Court Act already addressed this. We removed the community and circuit tribunals, but we still have the district and circuit courts, which are active,” he said.

His statement comes after Supreme Court nominee Justice Dzamefe backed calls for the establishment of regional tribunals to assist with justice delivery in Ghana.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee for vetting on Monday, Justice Dzamefe stated that tribunals would help reduce the case burden on the courts, as more criminal cases could be handled there.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Professor Ansa-Asare disagreed.

“The attempt to revive the tribunal is to refer the ORAL cases there, but it will bring down the popularity of the NDC. We don’t need it. We have the district court where we are struggling to pay the salary of just one person—how much more a tribunal where we’ll need three people?”

“Those people are also corrupt, so we’ll just be fuelling corruption if we bring them back,” he added.
