Tradition fills Manhyia Palace as Asantehemaa’s burial rites continue

The Manhyia Palace in Kumasi remains the focal point of solemn tradition as the burial rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, continue.

The palace courtyard came alive with echoes of Ashanti heritage: the steady rhythm of drums, the sounding of horns, and the mournful wails of dirges, as hundreds gathered to pay their respects to the revered queen mother.

Day three of the Dote Yie rites witnessed an influx of dignitaries, including political leaders, religious figures, and other notable personalities, who joined mourners dressed in red and black to honour her memory.

Traditional rulers from across Ghana were also present to commiserate with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the royal household, reflecting the deep cultural and national significance of the rites.

The event further drew participation from Igbo traditional leaders resident in Ghana, underscoring the far-reaching respect and cultural importance of the ceremonies beyond the Ashanti Kingdom.

On Tuesday, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stood as the embodiment of a grieving kingdom, clothed in intricately designed black mourning cloth adorned with cowries—a striking symbol of both sorrow and continuity.

In Ashanti tradition, black is the ultimate colour of bereavement, symbolizing solemnity and respect. The cowries sewn into the king’s cloth carry spiritual and ancestral meaning, historically used as currency and now serving as a tribute to the invaluable service and irreplaceable legacy of the late queen mother.

Delegations from across the country, including a notable Mfantse delegation led by Oguamanhene Osaberima Kwesi Atta, have joined the rites, emphasizing the unity and reverence surrounding the occasion.

With one more day of mourning rites to go, the Manhyia Palace continues to serve as the centre of Ghana’s cultural and political convergence, as the nation reflects on the enduring impact of Nana Konadu Yiadom III and her service to the Golden Stool.
