The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of celebrated gospel composer and choral leader Yaw Sarpong and his longtime soloist, Maame Adwoa Tiwaa.
Yaw Sarpong passed on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while Maame Tiwaa, his celebrated backing vocalist and member of the Asomafo music group passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
In a statement, the Ministry extended its sympathies to their families, colleagues and admirers, describing the loss as a painful moment for Ghana’s creative and spiritual community.
The Ministry said the pair’s musical journey left a lasting imprint on gospel and choral music in the country, helping to shape generations of performers and worshippers.
Yaw Sarpong was eulogized for his passion, discipline and mentorship, noting that through the Asomafo group, he raised many musicians and broadened Ghana’s cultural and Christian music heritage.
It also highlighted the unique bond between Yaw Sarpong and Mary Tiwaa, saying their collaboration produced timeless works that will continue to influence the creative arts space for years to come.
“Though they are gone, the impact of their music and service to the nation remains alive in the Creative Arts Sector and beyond,” the statement noted.
The Ministry assured the bereaved families of its support as Ghana mourns two towering figures in gospel music.
