Titus Owusu Darko wins top honour at 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary debate

Titus Owusu Darko, a student at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), has been crowned the Overall Best Debater at the 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary Debate held at the Parliament of Ghana on February 9, 2026.

Darko outshone finalists from top universities, including the University of Ghana (UG-Legon), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Development Studies (UDS), University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), and Central University.

The prestigious award comes with a cash prize of Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis, a gold medal, an award certificate, and the coveted Mace from the Parliament of Ghana. Darko’s victory is a testament to his exceptional debating skills and dedication to academic excellence.

In the debate, Darko argued against the motion, “Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy in the Commonwealth translates into actual economic opportunities for its university graduates,” presenting compelling evidence-based arguments.

His impressive performance earned commendations from influential office holders at the Ghana Parliament, including Madam Kate Addo and Superintendent Afia Tenge (Rtd.).

Speaking after the award ceremony, Darko expressed gratitude to his university and team members, dedicating the win to his family and mentors. “This achievement is a result of hard work and perseverance. I’m honored to represent UniMAC and Ghana on this prestigious platform,” he said.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Debate brought together top debaters from across the country, showcasing their skills in parliamentary procedures, argumentation, and public speaking. Darko’s win is a significant achievement for UniMAC and Ghana’s academic community.

The award ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including parliamentarians and academics, who praised Darko’s achievement and encouraged other students to emulate his success.
