The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have jointly threatened a nationwide strike over the delayed payment of their book and research allowance.
The unions have given the government until Friday, June 13, 2025, to pay the allowance, warning that they will not accept any further delay beyond September 2025.
In a jointly signed statement, the three unions expressed deep frustration over what they described as the “undue delay” in releasing the exchange rate required to calculate their allowances.
According to them, the delay has caused significant uncertainty and hardship for many of their members, who rely on the allowance to support academic work and research-related activities.
They emphasized that the book and research allowance is a statutory obligation enshrined in their Conditions of Service and should not be treated as a discretionary payment.
The unions are therefore calling on the government to act swiftly to prevent a disruption in academic activities across public universities, technical universities, and colleges of education.
