Three arrested in Accra over possession, manufacture of illegal guns

The Accra Regional Police Command has taken three men into custody over claims they were involved in the possession and production of locally made pistols in Shiashi, a suburb of Accra.

The suspects have been named as 24-year-old Patrick Gyimah, a dispatch rider from Bawaleshie; 27-year-old Emmanuel Osei Yeboah, an electrical welder from Adenta Commando; and 29-year-old Charles Somuah, a private security guard from Ogbojo.

Police say the arrests stemmed from a routine patrol on August 7, 2025, when officers came across Gyimah in a secluded location under circumstances they deemed suspicious.

A search reportedly uncovered a locally made pistol in his pocket.

Follow-up investigations indicated that Gyimah had bought the firearm from Yeboah and Somuah in East Legon for GH₵2,000, paying GH₵800 upfront, with the rest to be settled after he received documentation for the weapon.

On August 8, 2025, Gyimah is said to have led officers to the other suspects’ residences. At Yeboah’s home, police allegedly found two more locally manufactured pistols, a toy pistol, one BB 12-bore cartridge, and a jackknife. Yeboah is reported to have admitted making the guns and selling one to Gyimah.

All three have been charged under the Arms and Ammunition Act, 1972 (NRCD 9) with manufacturing firearms without authority, possessing firearms without authority, and abetting the manufacture of firearms without authority. They pleaded not guilty in court and were remanded into custody, with their next appearance scheduled for August 22, 2025.

The Regional Police Commander cautioned the public against producing, selling, or holding illegal firearms, stressing that such offences carry serious legal consequences. He urged residents to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the nearest police station to help safeguard public safety.
