Thomas Partey begins training with Villarreal after leaving Arsenal

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has officially kicked off preseason training with Villarreal CF as preparations intensify ahead of the 2025/26 La Liga campaign.

The 32-year-old joins the Yellow Submarine on a free transfer following the expiration of his five-year stint with English Premier League side Arsenal.

He has signed an initial one-year contract with the Spanish outfit, with an option to extend for a further year.

Partey’s arrival marks a return to familiar territory, having previously spent several seasons in La Liga with Atlético Madrid before his move to Arsenal in 2020.

Barely a day after sealing his move, Partey was spotted in training with his new teammates, demonstrating his eagerness to settle quickly into Marcelino’s setup.

During his time in North London, the Black Stars midfielder made 167 appearances for the Gunners, featuring prominently last season with 52 appearances under manager Mikel Arteta.

While primarily deployed in central midfield, Partey also occasionally filled in at right-back when needed.

Before his Premier League chapter, he racked up 188 appearances for Atlético Madrid, establishing himself as a key figure under Diego Simeone.
