This is not a political stunt – GPRTU on opposition to GH₵1 fuel levy [Audio]

-

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it is not pursuing any political agenda with its opposition to the GH₵1 fuel levy.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Public Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, reiterated that transport operators feel betrayed, considering they were asked to reduce fares by 15% barely two weeks ago.

He emphasised that if the union had been aware of the impending fuel levy, their approach to the fare reduction would have been different.

“The fare reduction was a risk we had to take, and we were not happy because the prices of other components are still high, even though there was a reduction in fuel prices,” he stated.

Mr. Imoro reaffirmed that GPRTU will not relent on its decision to embark on a nationwide strike if the government fails to initiate discussions by June 10, 2025.

“They announced this levy without any consultation. We are a major player in the fuel industry and use a lot of fuel in our work. Officially, there has been no engagement or communication with us.

“Everyone wants their child to go to good schools, but how do we also take care of our children if we don’t have the means? Nobody should see this as a political stunt because it is important to engage before any decision,” he stated.
