Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has paid his respects to the eight Ghanaians who tragically perished in the recent military helicopter crash.
Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by key figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), laid a wreath and lit a candle in memory of the deceased during a solemn ceremony held on Friday, August 8, at the Ceremonial Gardens of the presidency.
Describing the incident as a collective national heartbreak, he said, “This is a tragedy that affects all Ghanaians—not just me, not just the NDC. We are all mourning together.”
He emphasised that the victims died in the line of duty while serving the country, adding, “They were public servants on national assignment when this terrible accident occurred. Ghana has suffered a significant loss.”
Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had begun visiting some of the bereaved families to personally extend his sympathies.
“This morning, I visited the families of three victims, and I plan to continue tomorrow to reach out to the rest,” he noted.
He expressed heartfelt condolences to President John Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the affected families, describing the loss as “deeply painful.”
“Ghana has lost greatly through this tragedy, and that is why I am here to lay a wreath and show solidarity,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia further called for unity in the face of national sorrow.
“This is not about politics. It’s about our shared humanity. As members of the NPP, we see it as our duty to be fully involved and to stand with the nation at this difficult time,” he added.
