The future lies in STEM, not chew and pour – Adutwum

Former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has stressed that Ghana’s path to greatness lies in prioritising engineering and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Adutwum cited Vietnam as a model, noting that the Southeast Asian country, with a population of 93 million, produces about 100,000 engineers annually.

“Our production of engineers is inadequate not because of our population but due to poor structuring,” he said. “Out of the few engineers we produce, many still struggle to find jobs.”

He proposed aligning education with national development by offering tax incentives to construction firms and other industries that hire Ghanaian engineers.

“They will still pay taxes as employees, so it’s not a burden on the national budget,” he added.

Dr. Adutwum believes embedding STEM education at all levels — particularly in high schools — is key to transforming Ghana.

“If we had done this 60 years ago, we would be a great nation by now. We must not rely solely on theory; practical, hands-on education is the way forward,” he emphasised.
