The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has strongly condemned what it describes as a reckless and misleading press release jointly issued by the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) and the Technical University Workers Association of Ghana (TUWAG).
In a statement, TEWU said the groups are breakaway factions with no legal mandate, bargaining certificate, or moral authority to represent junior staff in public and technical universities.
It accused the groups of attempting to create confusion and undermine the ongoing fight for improved conditions of service for university workers.
TEWU emphasized that for over six decades, it has been the sole legally recognized and internationally respected union for junior staff across public and technical universities.
It cited the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) and the National Labour Commission as confirming TEWU’s status as the exclusive bargaining agent.
The union also noted that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has signed Rules of Engagement only with TEWU, not with TEWU-GH, TUWAG, or any other faction.
The union issued a warning to junior staff, urging them not to be deceived or manipulated by what it called illegitimate groups.
TEWU assured members that their salaries, working conditions, and job security remain protected under its leadership, stressing that any attempt to follow the advice of these factions could put their rights at risk.
TEWU reaffirmed that its ongoing strike action is legal, justified, and binding on all members, having complied fully with the provisions of the Labour Act in declaring the industrial action.
The union vowed not to allow a few “opportunists” to sabotage what it described as the legitimate struggle for justice and dignity at the workplace.
The leadership called on all junior staff in public and technical universities to stand firm with TEWU, participate fully in the strike, and reject with contempt any statements or directives from the rival groups.
