The suspects — Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abaana, Wilson Abasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, Aminu Zibrilla, Innusa Sumaila and Haruna Safianu — were arrested on January 11, 2026, following weeks of investigations.

Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, January 29, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

She explained that on July 21, 2025, the victim was travelling along the Tamale–Buipe highway when he was attacked by six armed men who made away with personal belongings, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, laptops and other items.

“The arrests form part of intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling highway robbery networks across the country,” COP Donkor said.

She further disclosed that in a separate operation, five suspects were arrested in connection with another robbery incident at Nkasei in the Ahafo Region.

According to her, the suspects — Muta Kofi, Mahamadu Sajoe, alias Salifu, Shaibu Issah, Abdul Suleman and Bukari Sule, alias Taylor — were arrested on different days following investigations into a robbery that occurred on December 2, 2025.

She said the suspects, together with other accomplices, allegedly blocked the Goaso–Tepa road while armed and attacked unsuspecting road users.

COP Donkor noted that investigations into both cases are ongoing, as police work to retrieve stolen items and identify additional accomplices.

She urged the public to remain vigilant, prioritise personal safety when travelling, and avoid sharing sensitive information with strangers as police intensify efforts to curb criminal activities nationwide.

Atwedie Assembly member worried over highway robberies; calls for urgent action https://www.adomonline.com/atwedie-assembly-member-worried-over-highway-robberies-calls-for-urgent-action/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 14:23:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2379919 The Assembly member for the Atwedie electoral area in the Asante Akyem South Municipality, Patrick Karikari Antwi, has called for immediate action to deal with the recent surge in highway robberies in the area.

In a statement, Mr Karikari said residents feel unsafe due to the increase in such incidents.

“Over the past few months, there has been a disturbing increase in reported incidents of robbery along the Atwedie Highway, leaving residents feeling vulnerable and in fear for their safety. Those brazen acts of criminality not only endanger the lives of innocent commuters but undermine the economic vitality of our community, the municipality, and the region at large.”

“In light of these troubling developments, I am calling upon the law enforcement authorities including the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Juaso Police Division, to implement immediate and effective measures to combat this epidemic of crime. Enhanced patrols, increased surveillance and strategic deployment of resources are needed to deter criminal activity and apprehend those responsible for these reprehensible acts,” the statement read in parts.

The Atwedie highway is a business hub that connects the municipality to neighbouring communities.

However, the constant threat of robbery according to Mr Karikari is impacting businesses.

He has therefore appealed to law enforcement authorities, including the Inspector General of Police(IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare and the Juaso Police Division, to take immediate steps to combat this menace.

He called for enhanced patrols, increased surveillance, and strategic deployment of resources to deter criminal activity and apprehend the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, he has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or incidents to the authorities promptly.
