The succession dispute in the Sunyani Traditional Area has taken a dramatic turn with the indefinite suspension of the Paramount Queenmother, Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Sika Brayie II.
The Sunyani Traditional Council, which announced the suspension with immediate effect, has also barred the Queenmother from performing any public duties on behalf of the Council.
Her suspension follows her alleged involvement in the enstoolment of Dr. Osei Tutu as Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, to succeed the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, who passed away in July 2022 and was buried in April 2024.
Caution to the Public
At a press conference, the Acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio II, cautioned the public and all institutions—especially the media—against engaging the Queenmother in any official capacity.
“The Nananom of the Sunyani Traditional Area/Council hereby inform all state institutions, the media, and the general public that Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Sika Brayie II has been suspended indefinitely from her position as the Paramount Queenmother of Sunyani,” he stated.
Nana Ababio, who also serves as Akwamuhene, urged stakeholders to treat the communiqué with urgency and seriousness, emphasising the Council’s commitment to preserving the integrity of traditional leadership.
Monday Incident
It was alleged that in the early hours of Monday, the suspended Queenmother employed the services of some “mecho men” in an attempt to overpower private security personnel at the Sunyani Old Palace in a bid to install her preferred candidate—despite the Traditional Council having already enstooled Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II as the legitimate successor.
However, private security reportedly thwarted the attempted takeover after an exchange of gunfire. When the plan to seize the palace failed, the Queenmother allegedly conducted a separate installation ceremony at her private residence in Baakoniaba.
Dr. Osei Tutu, a 63-year-old US-based Doctor of Physical Therapy, was reportedly given the stool name Ofentemfrem Omenasono Dr. Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri III.
Council’s Position
Nana Ababio described the Queenmother’s actions as an affront to the customs and traditions of the Traditional Council.
“What transpired is a clear affront to our customs and traditions, bringing public ridicule upon the Boahen Korkor Stool,” he said.
He added that her conduct was not only disrespectful but also a threat to the dignity of traditional leadership.
“This behaviour undermines the integrity of our leadership and affects the very fabric of our community,” he noted.
Only One Recognised Chief
Nana Ababio emphasised that Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II remains the only legitimate chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area.
“There is no other chief in the Sunyani Traditional Area other than Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II,” he said.
“This has been affirmed by the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, which dismissed the interlocutory injunction filed by the Queenmother on April 8, 2025.”
He described the enstooled chief as a unifier and a peacemaker who has made efforts to reconcile all factions, including those who initially opposed his installation.
Installation ‘Illegal’
Commenting on the purported installation of Dr. Tutu, Nana Ababio described it as illegal and baseless.
He revealed that Dr. Tutu had been one of seven aspirants for the stool but was rejected by the Kingmakers for failing to prove his lineage.
“The Queenmother has no authority to appoint anyone as chief,” Nana Ababio stressed.
“Recent events at Baakoniaba claiming to install an imposter are not recognised by us. This act is not only illegal but deeply disrespectful.”
He said the Queenmother’s actions represented a gross disregard for the authority of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs and the Traditional Court.
“Such indiscipline will not be tolerated by the Chiefs of the Traditional Council. Nananom have made a firm decision in response to these events. We will not allow the integrity of our chieftaincy to be undermined,” he warned.
He urged the public to treat any claim to the contrary with “utmost contempt.”
