A student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) has been stabbed amid unrest at the Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival in Koforidua, raising fears of possible retaliation and heightened security concerns.
The victim, identified as Jerome Appiah, was reportedly attacked by a group of Form Two students from New Juaben Senior High School while eating waakye on his way to campus. He sustained a deep machete wound to the shoulder and bled profusely.
Police from the Eastern Regional Command swiftly responded to the incident and rushed the injured student to the Eastern Regional Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Following the stabbing, the Headmaster of Koforidua SECTECH, Emmanuel Frimpong Benjabeng, accompanied by some teachers, hurried to the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre — the venue for the ongoing inter-schools sports festival — to avert any retaliatory attacks by agitated students.
At the time, Mr. Benjabeng was in a meeting with the New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, Mustapha Haruna Appiah, when reports of further disturbances emerged.
According to reports, the education director later sustained a head injury after being struck by a flying stone during clashes involving students of Nsutam Senior High Technical School, who were allegedly throwing stones at the venue.
Expressing concern over the recurring violence at school sporting events, Mr. Appiah called on the police and event organisers to conduct a thorough investigation and strengthen security arrangements to prevent further incidents.
