StarTimes Ghana has begun settling the remaining balance of its outstanding broadcast rights debt owed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), according to the company’s Public Relations Officer, Eli Kondoh.

The Chinese pay-television network reportedly owed the GFA over $800,000 from its previous deal to broadcast the Ghana Premier League.

The failure to clear the debt on time led the GFA to exclude StarTimes from its renewed broadcasting rights, which have since been awarded to AFA TV and Globe TV.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Kondoh confirmed that StarTimes has made part payment of the outstanding amount and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana football.

“If you’re owing somebody in excess of five million dollars and you pay as much, and it’s left with a little over eight hundred thousand dollars, it means that a lot of money has gone into the whole project,” Kondoh said.

“Just a few weeks ago, some amount of that outstanding balance has already been paid. So it means that StarTimes remains committed to the project of building Ghana football.

“So yes, it started very well. It didn’t end badly either, and those outstanding amounts will also be cleared.”

He added that while the partnership with the GFA was not renewed, StarTimes is open to returning in another capacity.

“It might not be specifically the Ghana Premier League—or maybe just an aspect of the league—but there are talks ongoing. It could be production.

“So the talks are still in progress, and once they are finalised, I’m sure you’ll get hold of it, and then we can communicate to the viewers exactly the details of the new terms that might come up.”

The update offers a possible pathway for a renewed working relationship between StarTimes and the GFA despite the recent break in their formal broadcast collaboration.
