The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has officially tabled the Sports Fund Bill in Parliament, marking a major step toward establishing a structured financial framework for sports in Ghana.
Since his confirmation as Minister, the Buem Constituency lawmaker has been committed to driving the Bill’s passage, highlighting its potential to accelerate sports development nationwide.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, December 11, Adams drew attention to the chronic funding challenges affecting Ghanaian sports, particularly in disciplines beyond football.
“It’s quite clear that over the years, this House has faced challenges in addressing many issues related to funding in our sports generally. Funding is mostly secured to support football, when indeed, sports go beyond football,” he said.
He also reflected on previous attempts to establish sustainable financing mechanisms, noting that past efforts had fallen short.
“There have been many attempts to put together a funding system that will enable the Ministry [of Sports and Recreation] to execute its programmes by bringing on board many more sporting disciplines and supporting them,” he added.
The Minister expressed confidence that the new Sports Fund would address these long-standing challenges.
“When approved, we will no longer face the challenges of funding our sports, and sports will grow to foster development and support other progressive activities in the country,” Adams said.
For years, Ghanaian athletes outside of football have relied on irregular donations and limited sponsorships to compete internationally. Adams believes the passage of this Bill will provide the financial foundation necessary for comprehensive sports development across the nation.
