The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has officially inaugurated the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA), signaling a renewed push for transformative reforms in Ghana’s sports sector.
Addressing the ceremony, Hon. Adams expressed appreciation to the board members for accepting their appointments at a pivotal moment for Ghanaian sports.
“Your presence here today is more than ceremonial; it demonstrates a commitment to repositioning sports administration in Ghana,” he said. “Expectations are high, and we must rise to meet them.”
The Minister emphasized that the focus of Ghana’s sports ecosystem has expanded beyond medals and competitions to include economic impact, social cohesion, job creation, athlete welfare, sustainable infrastructure, and digitized governance.
“Ghana has talent, history, and passion, but also faces gaps, inefficiencies, and outdated structures,” Hon. Adams noted.
He underscored the NSA’s central role in the sector, highlighting its responsibility for facilities management, athlete support, federation governance, grassroots development, and building private sector confidence. “A strong Authority drives sector growth; a weak one holds everything back,” he said.
Since taking office, the Ministry has implemented measures to restore confidence and focus within the sports sector, including improved stakeholder engagement, decentralization, and facility upgrades. Yet, the Minister stressed that these are only the first steps.
“We are now entering a phase that demands bold structural reforms, sharper policy alignment, and performance-based governance,” he added, urging the board to act with urgency, integrity, and practical solutions.
Hon. Adams also called for a review and update of the 2016 Sports Act and the development of a comprehensive national sports policy aligned with the evolving demands of the industry. “Commercialization, athlete protection, digital systems, gender equity, disability inclusion, infrastructure, and private investment are central to a modern sports system,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, the Minister pledged full Ministry support, emphasizing that the board’s collective experience and expertise are essential to achieving meaningful progress. “This is a call to duty,” he affirmed.
The new board marks a significant step in Ghana’s commitment to building a more competitive, inclusive, and sustainable sports sector.
