Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has appealed to Members of Parliament (MPs) to promote peace and civility ahead of the upcoming by-election in Akwatia, cautioning against violence in both words and actions.
Addressing the House on Tuesday after swearing in Ewurabena Aubynn as MP for Ablekuma North, Bagbin expressed concern over rising hostility in Ghana’s political and parliamentary spaces.
“Let’s totally remove the issue of violence from our lives, particularly our political lives—not only during elections but also here in the House when making submissions,” the Speaker said.
He lamented the confrontational tone and intemperate language increasingly dominating parliamentary debates, noting that “this House is now full of shouting. That is not how we started the Fourth Republican Parliament.”
Bagbin urged MPs to lead by example, fostering unity and demonstrating moral leadership.
“I am just using this opportunity to touch your hearts. So let’s tone down and continue to work together,” he added.
Reflecting on the tension that marred the recent Ablekuma North by-election, Bagbin expressed hope for a more peaceful process in Akwatia.
“What God has decreed, nobody can change. So please, I hope in the next by-election, we will see a calmer, more respectful contest than we had in Ablekuma North,” he said.
