SONA 2026: Gov’t to build 600 new basic schools to end ‘schools under trees’ – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will construct 600 new basic school facilities across Ghana as part of efforts to eliminate the “schools under trees” phenomenon.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament, he revealed that the intervention will include the construction of 200 kindergarten blocks, 200 primary school blocks, and 200 Junior High Schools nationwide.

He confirmed that adequate funding has already been provided in the 2026 budget to support the initiative.

“In response to the ongoing challenge of schools operating under trees, the government has planned a significant intervention for the 2026 financial year. This initiative includes the construction of 200 kindergarten blocks, 200 new primary school blocks, and 200 new junior high schools across the nation. I am pleased to announce that adequate funding has been allocated in the 2026 budget for these projects,” he stated.

President Mahama also disclosed that the government has fully cleared outstanding capitation grant arrears owed to public basic schools, as well as arrears relating to BECE registration subsidies due to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

“Additionally, the government has fully cleared all outstanding capitation grant arrears owed to public basic schools, as well as all outstanding arrears for BECE exam registration subsidies due to WAEC,” he added.
