The Accra High Court has scheduled July 23 as the start date for the trial of former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Board Chairman, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, and former Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, over the failed $2 million Accra Sky Train project.
Both men have been charged with causing financial loss to the state and willful misuse of public funds. They have pleaded not guilty and have been granted bail.
At a court sitting on Wednesday, July 9, the legal team for Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi officially withdrew their earlier application seeking to have the charges against him dismissed.
The application had previously prompted the Attorney General to file for an abridgement of time, leading the court to set an earlier hearing date of July 3. However, proceedings did not take place on that day due to the absence of the defence team.
When the case resumed on July 9, Justice Comfort Tasiame struck out the application after Prof. Akumfi’s lead counsel withdrew it in open court.
Lawyer Victoria Barth, who is now representing Solomon Asamoah, requested additional time to review case documents, noting that she had only recently taken over the matter from previous counsel.
Justice Tasiame subsequently adjourned the case to July 23 for the commencement of trial.
The prosecution informed the court that it intends to call the first of eight witnesses when proceedings begin.
