The Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has weighed in on President John Dramani Mahama’s controversial “side chick” comment, describing it as inappropriate for the platform on which it was made.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, Awuku acknowledged that while the comment may have been intended as a casual or “boys-boys” remark, it was expressed in the wrong setting.

“In all fairness, the ‘side chick’ comment was a boys-boys remark, but it was made on the wrong platform,” he added.

According to him, such statements are usually made in informal or private conversations, not on a public platform where every word from the President carries significant weight.

Awuku explained that as Head of State, any comment made by the President is often interpreted as a serious policy position or official communication, making it essential to exercise caution in public discourse.

He stressed that the issue should not necessarily be personalized but viewed in the context of the appropriateness of the forum in which the comment was made.

The MP further urged public officials, particularly the President, to be mindful of how their statements are perceived, given the influence and authority attached to their office.
