The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the first National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise for 2026 will take place on Saturday, January 10, starting at 6:00 a.m. and continuing until all clean-up activities are completed across the metropolis.
According to the Assembly, the exercise was originally scheduled for January 3 but was postponed to allow for uninterrupted Christmas and New Year trading in the Central Business District (CBD).
The AMA described the first sanitation exercise of the year as strategic, as it follows a period of intense commercial activity, increased waste generation, and heightened pressure on the city’s sanitation infrastructure.
In line with a presidential directive and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Communal Labour) Bye-Laws, 2017, all shops, markets, and business premises are required to remain closed during the exercise to ensure full public participation.
Cleansing activities will include desilting and cleaning drains, sweeping streets and lanes, removal of unauthorized banners and posters, and general clean-up operations in markets, lorry parks, and other public spaces.
The Assembly’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the exercise will cover all electoral areas, communities, markets, and the CBD, with intensified efforts at key locations including the Cable and Wireless enclave in Okaikoi South, Agbogbloshie Market, and surrounding areas.
The AMA urged residents to actively participate in the exercise to help ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthier city.
