Seven arrested as Ahanta West MCE leads anti-galamsey operation

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ahanta West in the Western Region, Ing. Ebenezer Aidoo, has led a joint security operation against illegal mining (galamsey) in the municipality.

The exercise, conducted in collaboration with officers from the National Security and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) of the Ghana Police Service, targeted deep-forest sites within the Cape Three Points Forest. It resulted in the arrest of seven suspects.

During the raid, the task force destroyed more than ten “changfan” machines, popularly known as “one leg,” dealing a significant blow to illegal miners in the area.

Speaking after the operation, Mr Aidoo expressed concern about the far-reaching impact of galamsey on both the environment and livelihoods, urging residents to rally behind the fight.

“The ripple effect of galamsey is enormous. We must all come together to fight this devastating calamity,” he stressed.

The MCE reaffirmed his commitment to protecting natural resources and enforcing the law, noting that the operation was a clear demonstration of his resolve. He added that pragmatic measures were being rolled out to enhance community safety and promote sustainable environmental practices in the municipality.
