Twenty-two of the more than 50 fishermen left stranded at sea following a violent armed attack near Senya Bereku have been rescued and safely returned to shore, as efforts continue to reach others still offshore.

The rescued fishermen arrived in two separate boats after fellow fishermen towed their disabled canoes to land. Their outboard motors had reportedly been stolen during the raid, leaving them stranded and unable to navigate back on their own.

Footage from the landing site captured emotional scenes as relatives and residents gathered at the shore, cheering and embracing the survivors.

In a traditional gesture of celebration and gratitude, white powder was sprinkled over the returning fishermen.

The attack occurred on Wednesday, February 25, during a night fishing expedition. Armed men reportedly fired warning shots, held the fishermen at gunpoint, and made away with seven outboard motors, generators, and other valuables.

The incident left more than 50 fishermen stranded in the waters off the Awutu Senya District in the Central Region.

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, revealed that four canoes were dispatched to support the rescue operation. The Ghana Armed Forces also joined the response, deploying Navy and Air Force personnel to assist in bringing the remaining stranded fishermen to safety.
