The Minority in Parliament has urged the Ministry of the Interior to refund about GH¢113 million collected from applicants who were unsuccessful in the ongoing recruitment exercise for Ghana’s security services.

The call follows statements by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who disclosed that more than 105,000 applicants have reached the medical screening stage, despite only 5,000 positions being available across the country’s security agencies. The minister also noted that nearly 500,000 people applied during the exercise.

Reacting to the development on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, John Ntim Fordjour, criticised the recruitment process, describing it as exploitative of job seekers amid rising unemployment.

“You promised them jobs without attaching clear conditions, and then you politically expanded the age limit from twenty-five to thirty-five, creating the impression that there was more room and access to opportunities,” he said.

Rev. Fordjour claimed that the large volume of applications generated significant revenue from application fees, estimating that the state collected over GH¢113 million. He also raised concerns about the aptitude test stage, alleging that some candidates were unfairly disqualified due to technical and internet-related challenges.

Describing the situation as unjust, he urged the government to refund applicants who were not successful and to implement more transparent measures in future recruitment exercises.

“These steps are necessary to prevent the financial exploitation of young people seeking employment opportunities in the security services,” he added.
