Second aspirant withdraws from Tamale Central Parliamentary race

The contest for the Tamale Central parliamentary seat has narrowed further, as Alhaji Ibrahim Seidu, an engineer, has withdrawn from the race.

His decision follows the earlier withdrawal of Halid Abdul Rauf, a lawyer and National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Sources close to Alhaji Seidu suggest he stepped aside due to the unusually high number of aspirants who picked nomination forms on the first day, signaling a highly competitive race.

With his exit, the number of confirmed aspirants now stands at 12, down from the initial 14.

Per the Electoral Commission’s timetable, nominations close today, Sunday, August 24, 2025, while filing of forms is scheduled for Thursday, August 28, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The Tamale Central by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting MP and Minister for Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash on August 6. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already announced it will not field a candidate in honour of the late MP.
