The Pokuase Dunyo Branch of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has come to the aid of 11 inmates at the Nsawam Prisons by paying their fines to secure their release.

Pokuase District Elder, Daniel Asare, told Adom News that the gesture formed part of activities marking their Women’s Fellowship Week celebration.

He said the church had often heard stories of people who ended up in prison simply because they were unable to pay the fines imposed on them, prompting the decision to intervene.

According to Elder Asare, the Women’s Fellowship has been involved in several community support activities aimed at bringing hope to people, but this time decided to assist inmates who were serving jail terms due to unpaid fines.

He explained that the fines for the 11 inmates varied depending on the offences committed. Some were fined as much as GHC 4,500, while others received fines ranging between GHC 800 and GHC 1,000. In total, the church spent about GHC 40,000 to secure their release.

Mr. Asare said the freed inmates could now reunite with their families and loved ones, but urged them to be of good behaviour and avoid actions that could lead them back to prison.

The Dunyo Women’s Fellowship Leader, Charlotte Dankwa, told Adom News that the inmates shared with her the difficult conditions inside the prison. She said they expressed deep gratitude and promised to turn over a new leaf.

She encouraged the beneficiaries to stay away from any conduct or associations that might land them back in trouble.

The freed inmates praised the church for coming to their aid at a time they felt all hope was lost, adding that they had learned valuable lessons and were committed to living responsibly to avoid returning to prison.
