Schäfer confident in Ghana Football’s future despite recent setbacks

Newly appointed Technical Advisor of the Black Stars, Winfried Schäfer, has expressed confidence in the future of Ghanaian football despite the recent setbacks.

Ghana, four-time champions of Africa, suffered a major blow after failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — the first time in 20 years they have missed out on the continental tournament.

The Black Stars finished bottom of their qualifying group with just three points, managing three draws and three defeats in the campaign.

Speaking to German publication Sächsische Zeitung, as cited by AfricaSoccer.com, Schäfer acknowledged the challenges but emphasised the importance of long-term development. He said, “There’s still a lot of work to do. The real challenge is to implement sustainable football projects within Ghana.” He added, “I’m still looking for international partners who can support us. But I’m optimistic.”

Despite their AFCON disappointment, the Black Stars recently ended a six-game winless streak with back-to-back victories over Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, restoring some confidence among supporters.

The team is set to regroup later this month for a four-nation tournament in the United Kingdom as part of preparations for the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana will face Chad and Mali in the crucial Matchday 7 and 8 fixtures in September.
