Residents of Sapeiman in the Ga West Municipality on Tuesday, November 4, hit the streets to demand the immediate construction of a footbridge along the Ofankor–Nsawam highway, citing growing safety concerns and challenges in accessing schools, markets, and health facilities.
According to the demonstrators, the absence of a pedestrian bridge has made crossing the busy highway extremely dangerous, especially for schoolchildren and the elderly.
They lamented that several near-fatal accidents have already occurred, yet authorities have failed to take action.
In interviews with Adom News, some residents appealed to the road contractor working on the Ofankor–Nsawam stretch to urgently assess the situation and construct a footbridge to prevent further casualties.
They described the daily struggle to cross the road as “a risk to life” and called for immediate intervention from both the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority.
The Ofankor–Nsawam highway is a key route linking Accra to parts of the country.
The ongoing expansion project has improved traffic flow but left pedestrians vulnerable in several communities, including Sapieman, Pokuase, and Amasaman.
Despite repeated appeals from residents, no pedestrian crossing or footbridge has been provided, a situation that continues to endanger lives and spark community agitation.
