SANCOK Foundation CEO calls for economic justice during global week of action on finance

As part of the Global Week of Action on Finance, the CEO of the Sanitizes Communities Konnect Foundation (SANCOK), Jacob Fenteng, has called for urgent economic justice for First Nations and local communities across the Global South.

Speaking at a commemorative event held at Tanyigbe Senior High School in the Ho Central Municipality of the Volta Region, Mr. Fenteng stressed that for far too long, marginalized communities have been excluded from decisions impacting their land, livelihoods, and future.

He noted that while the global financial system continues to benefit the powerful, ordinary people in Ghana and other parts of the Global South continue to suffer from poverty, environmental degradation, land dispossession, and historic injustices.

“Debt cancellation is essential. Unjust and illegitimate debts are crippling our essential services and stalling development. We need a fair system that serves people, not profits,” Mr. Fenteng said.

As part of the celebration, students of Tanyigbe SHS organized a float through the main streets of the town, holding placards with messages such as: “Save My Future,” “Use Taxes for Public Services, Not Debt Services,” “Make Earth Green Again,” “Pay Up Your Climate Debt,” and “We Want to Live.”

The headmaster of the school, Etse Godstime Seake-Kwawu, revealed in an interview with Adom News that the growing economic pressures highlighted during the global campaign have mentally affected some staff and parents. He appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to provide psychological and social support.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tanyigbe, Togbe Ameworkunu Danku IV, pledged the commitment of traditional leaders to environmental preservation through tree planting. He appealed for government support to expand reforestation efforts in the area.

The Global Week of Action on Finance continues to serve as a platform for advocacy and solidarity in pushing for a more just and inclusive financial system worldwide.
