Lead counsel for Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has appealed to the Accra High Court for additional time to file his written address in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

Speaking to journalists after proceedings, lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea explained that he recently took over the criminal aspect of the case from lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi and requires more time to adequately prepare the necessary legal submissions.

“I have taken over the criminal case that lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi was handling. That’s what I’ve done. But the rest of the cases are not with me,” he said.

According to Mr. Atta Akyea, the request for an extension is aimed at ensuring that the defence is given sufficient opportunity to properly present its arguments before the court reaches a decision.

He stressed that a fair hearing requires adequate time for all parties to prepare their submissions.

“I will plead with the court for that because if you want to have a fair trial, and if you want our input as part of the thinking of the judge, I believe they should allow time so that we will be able to do what is necessary,” he stated.

The senior lawyer noted that the written address is a crucial part of the legal process, as it enables the defence to comprehensively set out its arguments for the court’s consideration before judgment is delivered.

His request is expected to be considered by the court as proceedings in the Samreboi illegal mining case continue.
