The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has clarified that it has not received any medical report from former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta or his legal team, contrary to media claims.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the OSP, Sammy Darko, debunked reports indicating that the Office had been served with a medical report from the former minister.
This follows circulating reports that Mr. Ofori-Atta is battling cancer, with an alleged medical report making the rounds online.
According to Mr. Darko, what the OSP received cannot be classified as a medical report.
“That letter is not a medical report. I don’t understand why people keep calling it that. When you go to the hospital, there’s someone called a coordinator, and then there’s the doctor. The letter came from the coordinator, not the doctor,” he added.
He explained that the coordinator’s letter only mentioned that Mr. Ofori-Atta underwent a diagnostic procedure in March and that the planned surgery did not happen.
“Even that, they didn’t inform us about the diagnostic procedure. Later, when it was just three or four days to his expected return to Ghana, his lawyers wrote to us saying he couldn’t make it because he had surgery scheduled for 13th June.”
Mr. Darko further expressed disappointment that no proper medical report was submitted, only letters that lacked substantive details.
“He’s playing smart on us. No recent medical report has been submitted—only letters through his lawyers. If he was indeed unwell or undergoing surgery, why didn’t they provide full disclosure or documentation earlier?” he questioned.
He also rejected claims that the OSP acted unfairly by declaring Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted.
“Now the lawyers are saying they sent letters, but to us, those were not sufficient and definitely not medical reports,” he stressed.
Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation by the OSP for suspected corruption and related offenses during his tenure as Minister for Finance from 2017 to 2024.
