Samba O’Neil embraces pressure as new Asante Kotoko captain

Newly appointed Asante Kotoko captain, Samba O’Neil, has admitted that stepping into the leadership role comes with considerable pressure but says he remains confident in his ability to guide the team to success.

The Congolese defender was handed the captain’s armband as part of a broader restructuring within the club, following the departures of former leaders Justice Blay and Frederick Asare ahead of the 2025/26 season.

He will be supported by Henry Ansu as first deputy captain and Lord Amoah as second deputy.

In an interview with the club’s media team, O’Neil acknowledged the weight of expectations from the club’s passionate supporters but stressed his readiness to lead by example and push the team forward.

“I was under pressure at first, but I thank God everything is going well,” he said.

“I know a lot is expected of us—and our supporters are waiting too.

“Sometimes I don’t need to speak. I just need to act, and they’ll see that the leader is doing something, and they’ll follow. So this season, we need to work extra hard for the three competitions.”

O’Neil also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he has received from fans since joining the club in the 2023/24 season.

“Since my first day here in Kumasi, they have always supported me, and I hope it continues. They should keep supporting me,” he added.

Samba O’Neil has quickly become a key figure in Kotoko’s defense, earning the trust of both the technical staff and his teammates.

Meanwhile, the Porcupine Warriors are currently in South Africa, intensifying preparations for their 2025 Toyota Cup clash against South African giants Kaizer Chiefs.
