Residents of Nafeba, Ndesalla and surrounding communities in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region have raised concerns about the deplorable state of roads and the absence of a bridge over a stream linking their communities—a situation they say worsens during the rainy season.
The predominantly farming communities say the poor road network continues to undermine their livelihoods, making it extremely difficult to transport farm produce to nearby market centres. They lament that their efforts to earn a decent living are often frustrated by the condition of the roads.
A visit by Adom News revealed severely damaged road stretches and the absence of a bridge over the stream, forcing residents to physically carry motorbikes across the water in order to access neighbouring communities for business and other activities.
According to residents, the situation becomes more dire during the rainy season, as farmers are unable to convey their crops to markets, leading to post-harvest losses and reduced incomes.
They further disclosed that pregnant women and sick persons face serious challenges accessing healthcare facilities, with some reportedly dying en route due to the poor road conditions.
Concerns were also raised about education in the area, as residents noted that the only basic school serving the communities is in a deplorable state, limiting children’s access to quality education.
The affected communities are therefore appealing to the Krachi Nchumuru District Assembly, the Member of Parliament and the government to urgently rehabilitate the road network, construct a bridge over the stream, and improve infrastructure to enhance commercial and social activities in the area.
