Rent Control operates with only two cars nationwide – Principal Rent Manager Reveals

Principal Rent Manager at the Rent Control Department, Ishmael Essien, has revealed that the institution tasked with regulating rent issues across Ghana is operating with only two vehicles nationwide, a situation he says is severely hampering its work.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Essien lamented the logistical challenges facing the department, stressing that its operations have been crippled by inadequate resources.

“If Rent Control says we don’t have a car, it becomes a problem. We had just one car in the entire department for all our work across the country. Recently, we were given one more, so now we have two cars,” he disclosed.

He said despite the crucial role Rent Control plays in mediating disputes between landlords and tenants, the institution has not received the necessary support to perform efficiently.

“All the time, we consider that the bigger effect will emanate from the top in everything we do. The media must help us push for logistics because we are doing our best with very limited means,” Mr. Essien appealed.

The revelation comes at a time when many Ghanaians have questioned the effectiveness of the Rent Control Department, citing rising rent costs and weak enforcement of the country’s rent laws.

Under Ghana’s Rent Act, landlords are required to collect a maximum of six months’ rent advance, but the law is rarely enforced, leaving tenants vulnerable to exploitation.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Essien maintained that Rent Control remains a vital institution with a sound legal framework.

He emphasized that with adequate logistical and political support, the department can effectively implement rent regulations to protect both tenants and landlords.

“We have one of the best systems, but without the tools and backing to work, it becomes difficult,” he noted.
