Renel Ghana Foundation has strongly condemned the recent domestic violence incident at Ofankor, which was captured in a viral video, describing it as a troubling reflection of Ghana’s inadequate response to gender-based violence.
In a statement issued on November 18, 2025, the Foundation criticised the government for systemic failures, highlighting an 87% budget cut to domestic violence interventions in the 2025 fiscal year. The group warned that this drastic reduction undermines national efforts to protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.
The Foundation also raised concerns that earlier reports to the police, according to the survivor’s interview on TV3, were ignored. It said this raises serious questions about institutional accountability and the effectiveness of protection agencies.
Renel Ghana Foundation further noted that many districts still lack Domestic Violence and Victim Support Units (DOVVSU), shelters remain inadequate, and frontline agencies face underfunding, staffing shortages, and limited logistics.
The Foundation is calling on the government to immediately restore and increase funding for domestic violence interventions, establish nationwide one-stop centres for legal, medical, psychological, and social support, and strengthen responsiveness across DOVVSU, the Police Service, Social Welfare, and health facilities.
It commended the individual who recorded the video for drawing national attention to the abuse and encouraged responsible whistleblowing to help break the culture of silence.
Renel Ghana Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for survivors and pushing for stronger systems to combat domestic violence in Ghana.
