Referees, not coaches, decide Ghana Premier League outcomes – Young Apostles coach alleges

-

Young Apostles FC head coach, William Afoakwa, has alleged that referees and club owners—not coaches—ultimately determine the outcomes of matches in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Speaking in an interview with Sikka FM, Afoakwa expressed deep concerns about the integrity of the league, accusing officials of undermining fair competition.

“In the Ghana Premier League, we coaches are just following the team. It’s the club owners and referees who determine the results,” he said.

His remarks add to the growing list of criticisms aimed at officiating in the GPL, which has long been marred by allegations of match-fixing and inconsistent referee performance. These issues have contributed to waning public confidence in the league’s credibility.

Despite the challenges, Afoakwa’s Young Apostles managed to avoid relegation in their debut Premier League season, finishing 14th with 40 points from 10 wins, 10 draws, and 14 losses.

The Yellow and Blues are expected to regroup and reinforce their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season, with hopes of improving on their inaugural top-flight performance.
