Ralph Gyambrah rejects GFA President term extension proposal

Former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association (RFA) Chairman Ralph Gyambrah has rejected proposals aimed at extending the tenure of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) president.

Ahead of the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram, the Statutes Review Committee has recommended increasing the president’s term from two to three terms.

The proposal also includes a new leadership structure that would see two vice presidents appointed—one of whom must be a woman—to promote the development of women’s football in Ghana.

But in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Gyambrah, a former Executive Council member, argued that the proposed amendments do not address Ghana football’s most urgent concerns.

“The issues confronting Ghana football are not about the extension of the office for the president. There are issues like match-fixing and poor officiating, which must be dealt with,” he said.

He also questioned the justification for mandating a female vice president under the guise of aligning with global practices.

“If you say you want to align with what FIFA and CAF are doing, there is no woman as a second vice president.”

Gyambrah further expressed concern that the GFA’s current statutes haven’t been fully tested or implemented to warrant such changes.

“I don’t believe that you necessarily need a woman to be in there to empower women’s football. I believe that the statutes of the Football Association have not been tested. At the moment, I don’t believe we need a term limit extension.

“I believe that one person cannot develop the game, and so when your time is up, you leave for someone to come and help,” he added.

He also criticised the apparent passivity of club administrators during Congress sessions.

“I am surprised club administrators are not challenging issues at Congress. Congress has now become a talking series that is not helping the game,” Gyambrah said.
