The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to resolve mounting concerns over its prepaid metering system within 48 hours.

The order follows an emergency meeting between the regulator and the power distributor after numerous consumers reported unusually fast depletion of prepaid electricity units.

As part of the directive, ECG has been asked to submit a comprehensive report detailing the issues raised by customers and the corrective measures being implemented to address them.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, the Acting Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, stressed that the Commission’s priority is to ensure fairness and accountability in the delivery of electricity services.

“The consumer must be protected, safeguarded, and be able to have equal access to ECG, and that is the focus. ECG is supposed to work timeously to solve the problem,” he stated.

Dr. Suleman added that while the Commission expects ECG to act promptly, it will not hesitate to invoke appropriate legal measures if the company fails to comply with the directive.

The move comes amid growing public dissatisfaction over prepaid billing, with customers demanding greater transparency and improved service from the power distributor.
