Prosper Tachie, a teacher at T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School (SHS), has been elected President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), defeating incumbent Rev. Isaac Owusu in a closely contested race in Accra.
Tachie received 436 votes, representing 61.75 percent of the valid ballots cast. Rev. Owusu secured 266 votes, amounting to 37.78 percent, while a third candidate, Charles K. Amponsah, obtained two votes, or 0.28 percent.

The election was held during GNAT’s 7th National Delegates Conference at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Auditorium, where delegates from across the country gathered to elect new national officers. Of the 706 ballots cast, 704 were declared valid, with two rejected.
As president-elect, Tachie will be expected to lead the Association’s engagement with government and key stakeholders on priority issues, including improved working conditions, remuneration, professional development, and enhanced teaching and learning environments for both teachers and students.
Meanwhile, Mr. Amponsah, a teacher at Asare Bediako SHS, has filed an injunction at the Accra High Court challenging the election. He petitioned the court, citing alleged breaches of the Association’s constitution, procedural irregularities, and concerns over the credibility of the delegates’ register used for the elections.
