Professor Godfred Bokpin, an economist and Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, has urged the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take full advantage of its parliamentary majority to implement far-reaching economic and structural reforms.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion on the recent Bank of Ghana intervention in the forex market, Prof. Bokpin stressed that the NDC has a rare opportunity, given its control of both the Executive and Legislature.
“This government has the best opportunity because, practically, we don’t have an opposition in Parliament. The NPP has effectively walked itself into a silent opposition by the way they conduct themselves. So, the government has the leverage. In fact, there is broader support for this government and what they are doing, so they should take advantage of that and initiate far-reaching governance reforms, structural reforms, and productivity-enhancing reforms—because they’ve got the numbers in Parliament.”
He noted that similar expectations existed when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed power in 2017, but they failed to maximise the opportunity despite having a parliamentary majority.
“It was the same expectation we had when President Akufo-Addo came to office in 2017—because he had the numbers,” he recalled.
Prof. Bokpin encouraged the NDC government to act decisively in the national interest, emphasising that bold leadership and strategic policy direction are critical if Ghana is to sustain and enhance current economic gains.
“So if this government does not take advantage of the moment, we are likely to regret it sometime to come,” he warned.
