The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has announced a series of major resolutions aimed at strengthening teacher welfare, boosting professional development, and enhancing security in schools after its 49th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
Key initiatives unveiled include a Free Insurance Scheme (FIS) for members at no cost, a PRETAG Health Fund (PHF) to support teachers in times of need, a nationwide membership drive to strengthen union structures, and a new programme, Teachers’ Assembly, to enhance direct engagement between union leaders and members.
The meeting, held at Oyinka Hotel in Koforidua from July 24 to 27, 2025, brought together union leaders to address persistent challenges confronting educators across the country.
PRETAG President King Ali Awudu reaffirmed the association’s commitment to fighting for better working conditions, calling for immediate action on delayed promotions, payment of arrears, provision of teaching and learning resources, and implementation of deprived area allowances.
“We call for the full implementation of the collective agreement to ensure fairness and dignity for teachers nationwide,” Mr. Awudu stressed.
On professional reforms, the NEC urged the National Teaching Council (NTC) to ensure that ongoing teacher licensing processes do not disadvantage educators.
While supporting the integration of licensure exams into the school curriculum, PRETAG insisted that the sanctity and professionalism of the teaching profession must not be compromised.
The union also demanded reforms to the Professional Learning Community (PLC) programme, recommending monthly sessions instead of weekly ones, and exemptions for teachers on vacation.
Raising concerns over recent attacks on students in Senior High Schools located in conflict-prone areas, PRETAG appealed to government to provide adequate security in these schools without delay.
In a landmark move toward gender equality, the NEC resolved to reserve five seats on the Council exclusively for women.
The meeting further approved the promulgation of a new PRETAG constitution, endorsed at the association’s 2nd Quadrennial Congress in November 2024.
